No Depression (album)

No Depression is the debut studio album by the alternative country band Uncle Tupelo, released in 1990. It is considered a seminal work in the alt-country genre, often cited as the album that gave the movement its name. The title itself, No Depression, is taken from a 1930s Carter Family song, reflecting the album's fusion of punk rock energy with traditional country and folk influences.

The album was recorded at Belleville, Illinois's Studio 19 and produced by Sean Slade and Paul Q. Kolderie. The lineup for No Depression consisted of Jeff Tweedy, Jay Farrar, and Mike Heidorn. The songs on No Depression explore themes of economic hardship, working-class struggles, and disillusionment, often presented with a raw and unpolished sound. While not commercially successful upon its initial release, No Depression gained critical acclaim and a dedicated following, solidifying Uncle Tupelo's place as pioneers of alt-country. Key tracks include "Graveyard Shift," "Screen Door," and "Whiskey Bottle." The album's influence can be heard in the work of many subsequent alt-country artists.
