Seman (river)

The Seman is a river in southwestern Albania. Formed by the confluence of the Devoll and Osum rivers near Gramsh, it flows westwards into the Adriatic Sea north of the Vjosa river delta. The river's total length is approximately 85 kilometers. The Seman River basin is an important agricultural area within Albania. The river is also susceptible to flooding, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall. The river is relatively unpolluted compared to other rivers in Albania, but is still subject to some agricultural runoff. The historical name for the Seman is Apsus, however the Apsus river originally described by ancient writers likely referred to either the modern Osum or the Seman after their confluence, rather than what we know as the Seman today.
