Newport West (Senedd constituency)

Newport West is a constituency of the Senedd (Welsh Parliament) in Wales. It elects one Member of the Senedd (MS) by the first past the post electoral system. It is located within the South Wales East electoral region.

Boundaries

The constituency was created for the first election to the Assembly, in 1999, with the name and boundaries of the Newport West parliamentary constituency. It covers the western part of the city of Newport.

Voting System and Representation

Newport West elects one MS using the first past the post system. Additionally, the constituency is part of the South Wales East electoral region, which elects four additional MSs to produce a degree of proportional representation for the region as a whole.

History

The constituency has generally been a Labour-held seat since its creation. However, political shifts have seen challenges and changes in representation over the years.
