Neck (Chinese constellation)

The Neck (亢, Kàng) is one of the Twenty-Eight Mansions, which are the traditional divisions of the celestial sphere in Chinese astronomy. It is one of the eastern mansions, associated with the Azure Dragon of the East, and represents the dragon's neck.

The Neck mansion spans approximately 9 degrees in the sky and is primarily located in the constellation of Virgo in modern astronomy. Its main asterism consists of four stars, including Kappa Virginis (Kang Su Yi), which is traditionally considered the primary star representing the Neck. The other stars associated with the asterism are Lambda Virginis, Iota Virginis, and another fainter star nearby.

Astrologically, the Neck mansion was associated with good fortune in building and construction, particularly for foundations. It was also considered a favorable time for traveling and settling disputes. Conversely, activities such as weddings and funerals were generally avoided during the period when the Moon was in this mansion.

Different interpretations and minor variations in the exact stars included in the Neck asterism exist across various historical texts and astronomical traditions. However, the general association with the dragon's neck and its location in the Virgo region remains consistent.
