Sett (paving)

A sett is a paving stone, generally cuboid or roughly so, used for creating paved surfaces. Setts are typically made of granite, basalt, or other durable natural stone. Historically, they were also made from wood. The term "sett" is often used interchangeably with "cobblestone," although a subtle distinction exists: setts are usually more uniform in shape and size and laid in a more regular pattern than cobblestones, which are naturally rounded stones gathered from riverbeds or beaches.

Setts are used in a variety of applications, including roads, pathways, driveways, and courtyards. They are valued for their durability, aesthetic appeal, and ability to withstand heavy loads. They provide a robust and relatively low-maintenance paving solution. The laying of setts is a skilled craft, often involving the creation of intricate patterns and designs. Different sizes and colours of setts can be combined to create visually interesting surfaces. While modern paving materials such as asphalt and concrete are more common for high-traffic roads, setts remain a popular choice for areas where aesthetics and historical character are important considerations. They are often found in historic city centers and pedestrian zones. The rough surface of a sett-paved area provides good traction in wet conditions.
