Golden Rainbow (musical)
Golden Rainbow is a musical with a book by Ernest Kinoy, and music and lyrics by Walter Marks. It is based on the play A Hole in the Head by Arnold Schulman.
The musical centers on Larry Freeman, a widower and single father living in Las Vegas, who dreams of striking it rich with a new invention or scheme. He lives in a run-down motel and struggles to provide for his sensitive son, Ally. When his late wife's sister, Judy, a more stable and responsible woman from New York, arrives with the intention of taking Ally back east for a better life, Larry must prove he can be a responsible parent and finally achieve a lasting success. The musical follows Larry's various attempts to get rich quick, his complicated relationship with Judy, and his love for his son.
Golden Rainbow is notable for starring the real-life married couple Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gormé as Larry and Judy. The original Broadway production opened at the Shubert Theatre on February 4, 1968, and closed on January 25, 1969, after 385 performances. The production was directed by Arthur Storch and choreographed by Tony Mordente. The score included the song "I've Gotta Be Me," which became a signature song for Sammy Davis Jr. and a popular standard.
