Gleaning

Gleaning is the act of collecting leftover crops from farmers' fields after they have been commercially harvested, or on fields where it is not economically profitable to harvest. Historically, and in some modern contexts, it also refers to the collection of wild plants, such as berries and nuts, that are available for gathering.

Gleaning has ancient roots, with mentions found in religious texts and historical records across various cultures. It served as a means for the poor, landless, or marginalized individuals to obtain food and supplement their livelihoods. Laws and customs often regulated gleaning practices to ensure fairness and prevent abuse.

In modern agriculture, gleaning can help reduce food waste and provide food for food banks, charities, and individuals facing food insecurity. Organized gleaning initiatives often involve volunteers who harvest surplus crops under the permission and guidance of farmers. These initiatives can address both economic and environmental concerns by reducing food waste and making nutritious food accessible to vulnerable populations.

The term "gleaning" can also be used metaphorically to describe the act of gathering information or knowledge from various sources, often scattered or overlooked.
