Thomas Smart (New South Wales politician)
Thomas Smart (1796 – 5 September 1877) was an Australian merchant, pastoralist, and politician in the New South Wales Legislative Council.
Born in Hampshire, England, Smart emigrated to New South Wales in 1819, initially working as a clerk for Simeon Lord. He quickly established himself as a successful merchant, amassing considerable wealth through shipping, land ownership, and pastoral activities.
Smart was nominated to the New South Wales Legislative Council on 15 May 1856 and served until his resignation on 20 March 1861. During his time in the Council, he was known for his conservative views and support of established institutions. He was a staunch advocate for the interests of landowners and pastoralists.
Outside of politics, Smart was actively involved in philanthropic endeavors and a prominent figure in Sydney society. He died at his residence in Sydney in 1877.
