Nancy Jones (missionary)

Nancy Jones (1838-1921) was a Welsh Calvinistic Methodist missionary who served in the Khasi Hills of Assam, India for over 40 years. She is regarded as a key figure in the development of education and healthcare within the Khasi community, particularly for women.

Born in Talsarnau, Wales, Jones felt a strong calling to missionary work. She arrived in the Khasi Hills in 1876, joining the established Welsh mission. Initially, her work involved teaching at the girls' school in Cherrapunjee. She quickly learned the Khasi language and immersed herself in the local culture.

Jones became instrumental in expanding educational opportunities for Khasi girls, establishing new schools and developing curricula that were relevant to their lives. She also championed the importance of teacher training, establishing a teacher training college to improve the quality of education in the region.

Beyond education, Jones played a significant role in providing healthcare to the Khasi people. She established medical dispensaries and provided basic medical care, often traveling long distances to reach remote villages. Her efforts helped improve sanitation and hygiene practices and combat disease.

Nancy Jones retired from missionary service in 1919 and returned to Wales, where she died in 1921. Her legacy in the Khasi Hills endures, with numerous schools and institutions named in her honor. She is remembered as a dedicated and compassionate missionary who made a lasting contribution to the social and spiritual well-being of the Khasi community. Her work laid a foundation for future generations of Khasi women and helped shape the development of the region.
