Allan Gilmour (businessman, born 1805)

Allan Gilmour (1805-1884) was a Scottish-Canadian businessman, prominent in the lumber trade in British North America during the 19th century. He was a partner in the firm Gilmour, Rankin and Company, a leading importer of timber from Canada to Great Britain, and an important player in the development of the timber industry in the Ottawa Valley and other regions of what is now Canada.

Born in Eaglesham, Renfrewshire, Scotland, Gilmour emigrated to Canada in the early 1820s to join his uncles in the family business. He quickly rose through the ranks, demonstrating strong business acumen. His involvement in Gilmour, Rankin and Company contributed significantly to the firm's expansion and success. The company owned extensive timber limits, sawmills, and shipping interests.

Gilmour resided primarily in Montreal, Lower Canada (later Quebec), where he managed the Canadian operations of the company. He was known for his entrepreneurial spirit and his commitment to innovation in the lumber industry. He played a key role in introducing new technologies and techniques to improve efficiency and productivity.

Beyond his business activities, Allan Gilmour was also involved in various philanthropic and civic endeavors in Montreal.
