NGC 4754

NGC 4754 is a lenticular galaxy located approximately 52 million light-years away in the constellation Virgo. It is a member of the Virgo Cluster, a large and relatively nearby galaxy cluster.

Lenticular galaxies, like NGC 4754, possess characteristics intermediate between spiral and elliptical galaxies. They typically have a central bulge and a disk-like structure, similar to spiral galaxies, but lack prominent spiral arms. They often contain little or no ongoing star formation.

NGC 4754 is classified as an SB0 galaxy, indicating a barred lenticular galaxy. The "SB" designates the presence of a bar structure in the central region, while the "0" signifies its lenticular classification.

It is gravitationally interacting with the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 4762. This interaction may be responsible for some of the structural features observed in both galaxies. Studies have shown evidence of tidal distortions and gas stripping in NGC 4754 potentially caused by the gravitational influence of NGC 4762.

The galaxy was discovered by William Herschel in 1784.
