Mutsamudu
Mutsamudu is the second-largest city in Comoros. It is located on the island of Anjouan, one of the three principal islands that make up the Union of the Comoros.
Mutsamudu serves as the de facto capital of Anjouan, though sometimes Sima is considered the capital. It is a significant port city, handling the majority of the island's exports, including vanilla, cloves, coffee, and ylang-ylang.
The city features a historic medina, characterized by narrow streets and traditional architecture. Mutsamudu is also home to a historic citadel, a vestige of the island's complex history, including periods of sultanate rule and French colonial administration.
Economically, Mutsamudu relies heavily on agriculture and port activities. Tourism plays a smaller, but growing, role in the local economy.
Mutsamudu has experienced periods of political unrest, linked to secessionist movements on Anjouan. The city's history reflects the broader political challenges facing the Comoros.
