Lav Kush

Lav and Kush (sometimes spelled Luv and Kush) are the twin sons of the Hindu deity Rama and his wife Sita. Their story is primarily recounted in the Hindu epic Ramayana, traditionally attributed to Valmiki.

According to the Ramayana, Sita was exiled to a forest hermitage near the Ganges River by Rama, due to public suspicion regarding her purity after her abduction by Ravana. In the hermitage, she was given shelter by the sage Valmiki and gave birth to Lav and Kush. Valmiki educated and raised the boys, teaching them martial arts, scriptures, and singing. He also taught them the Ramayana.

When Lav and Kush grew older, they traveled with Valmiki to Rama's kingdom of Ayodhya. There, during an Ashvamedha Yagna (horse sacrifice), they fearlessly challenged Rama's army and even captured the sacrificial horse. Upon being recognized by Rama, the twins narrated the Ramayana in his court. It was then revealed that they were his sons and Sita was brought back.

The narrative varies slightly in different versions of the Ramayana across India and Southeast Asia. However, the central theme remains consistent: Lav and Kush represent the embodiment of righteousness, courage, and adherence to dharma. They are often revered for their innocence, devotion, and mastery of knowledge and combat skills.

Lav and Kush are considered important figures in the Ramayana as they symbolize the continuation of Rama's lineage and the triumph of virtue. Their story underscores themes of family, duty, justice, and the importance of education. Many places across India are named after them, reflecting the widespread reverence for these characters.
