Monsignor (film)

Monsignor is a 1982 American drama film directed by Frank Perry, starring Christopher Reeve, Geneviève Bujold, and Fernando Rey. The film tells the story of a young, ambitious priest during World War II, Father John Flaherty, who rises rapidly through the ranks of the Catholic Church.

Flaherty is assigned to the Vatican to handle its finances, which are in dire straits due to the war. He becomes involved in a complicated relationship with a nun, Sister Agnes, and becomes increasingly embroiled in questionable financial dealings, including black market activities and deals with the Mafia, all in an attempt to save the Church from bankruptcy.

The film explores themes of faith, ambition, corruption, and love within the context of the Catholic Church hierarchy. Monsignor was controversial upon its release due to its perceived negative portrayal of the Church and its handling of sensitive issues. It was a critical and commercial failure.
