Sinjsko Polje

Sinjsko Polje is a karst field (polje) located in the Dalmatian hinterland of Croatia, near the town of Sinj. It is situated between the mountains of Kamešnica, Dinara, and Svilaja, forming a relatively flat and fertile agricultural area.

The polje is characterized by its periodic flooding, particularly during the rainy seasons, due to the high water table and impermeable bedrock. This flooding historically shaped the landscape and influenced agricultural practices. Drainage improvements have been implemented over the years to mitigate the effects of flooding and increase arable land.

Agriculture is a significant activity in Sinjsko Polje, with crops like cereals, vegetables, and fodder being cultivated. The area is also known for its livestock farming.

The Alka tournament, a traditional knights' tournament held annually in Sinj, is closely associated with Sinjsko Polje. The participants, known as Alkari, ride across a section of the field during the competition.

The hydrological characteristics of Sinjsko Polje are complex and have been studied extensively. The field is fed by several springs and streams, and water management remains an important issue for the local community.
