Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Electricity (Ethiopia)
The Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Electricity (MoWIE) was a government ministry in Ethiopia responsible for the planning, development, and management of the country's water, irrigation, and electricity resources. Its mandate encompassed policy formulation, strategic planning, project implementation, and regulatory oversight related to these sectors.
Specifically, the Ministry was tasked with ensuring equitable and sustainable access to water resources for various uses, including agriculture (through irrigation schemes), domestic water supply, and industrial purposes. It oversaw the development and management of irrigation projects to enhance agricultural productivity and food security.
In the electricity sector, the Ministry played a key role in expanding access to electricity across Ethiopia, including both grid-connected and off-grid solutions. It was responsible for planning and implementing electricity generation, transmission, and distribution projects, often involving large-scale hydropower projects. The Ministry also oversaw the Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP), the state-owned utility responsible for electricity generation, transmission, and distribution, and the Ethiopian Electric Utility (EEU), which focuses on distribution and retail services.
Furthermore, MoWIE was involved in promoting energy efficiency and the development of renewable energy sources, such as solar, wind, and geothermal power. The Ministry worked with various stakeholders, including government agencies, international organizations, private sector companies, and local communities, to achieve its goals.
Note: The Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Electricity has since been reorganized/restructured. An update to reflect the current ministerial structure would be needed for the most accurate encyclopedia entry.
