Miller Lake (Oregon)

Miller Lake is a natural lake located in the southern Cascade Mountains of Oregon, within Klamath County. It is situated in a caldera formed approximately 7,200 years ago following a volcanic eruption of Mount Mazama. Unlike its more famous neighbor, Crater Lake, Miller Lake's formation did not involve complete caldera collapse and subsequent filling with rainwater alone.

The lake is notable for its exceptional clarity and cold water temperatures. It is fed primarily by snowmelt and groundwater springs, lacking any significant surface inlets or outlets. The absence of surface streams contributes to its purity. Its elevation is approximately 5,000 feet (1,500 meters) above sea level.

Miller Lake supports a population of brook trout, which were introduced. Native fish species are not present due to natural barriers preventing their access. Recreational activities at the lake include fishing and non-motorized boating, preserving its tranquil environment. Camping is available at designated campgrounds in the surrounding Miller Lake Campground.

The area surrounding Miller Lake is characterized by dense coniferous forests and volcanic terrain. The lake and its watershed are managed by the U.S. Forest Service. The surrounding area offers hiking trails with views of the lake and the Cascade Mountains. The lake's relatively remote location contributes to its pristine condition and limited development.
