Silverthorn (novel)
Silverthorn is a fantasy novel written by Raymond E. Feist, published in 1985. It is the second book in The Riftwar Saga, following Magician (released in two parts as Magician: Apprentice and Magician: Master in some editions).
The novel continues the narrative established in Magician, focusing on the Kingdom of the Isles and its struggle against external and internal threats in the aftermath of the initial Tsurani invasion. A mysterious plague is introduced, threatening the kingdom's stability. Prince Arutha of Krondor must investigate the source of the plague and find a cure, leading him on a perilous quest. He is joined by various companions, including the magician Macros the Black, the thief Jimmy the Hand, and the warrior Laurie.
The central plot revolves around the quest for the legendary plant Silverthorn, believed to be the only cure for the spreading illness. Arutha's journey takes him through dangerous lands, involving encounters with various magical creatures and adversaries. The novel explores themes of loyalty, sacrifice, and the struggle against overwhelming odds. Silverthorn further develops the characters introduced in Magician and expands upon the world of Midkemia. It is considered a significant work in the high fantasy genre and a pivotal entry in The Riftwar Saga.
