Bais (clan)
The Bais are a Rajput clan found primarily in the northern Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. They claim descent from the legendary Suryavanshi (Solar dynasty) rulers. Historically, the Bais Rajputs held significant landholdings, particularly in the region of Baiswara, located in present-day Uttar Pradesh, between the Ganges and Yamuna rivers.
The Baiswara region derived its name from the prominence of the Bais clan. The clan played a notable role in the history of the region, often engaged in conflicts with neighboring groups and asserting their independence. Their influence and power varied throughout different periods.
While traditionally a landowning and warrior class, the Bais Rajputs are now found in diverse occupations. They continue to maintain their clan identity and often observe traditional Rajput customs and practices. Genealogical records are often preserved by family members and Bhats (genealogists) to maintain knowledge of lineage and clan history.
The Bais clan is divided into several sub-clans or branches, each with its own distinct lineage and geographical concentration. Specific details regarding these sub-clans and their histories may vary depending on the source.
