Mercedes-Benz SL-Class (R231)
The Mercedes-Benz SL-Class (R231) is the sixth generation of the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class roadster, debuting at the North American International Auto Show in January 2012 and going on sale in March 2012. Replacing the R230 model, the R231 chassis is constructed from aluminum, making it significantly lighter than its predecessor. It features a retractable hardtop roof.
Key features of the R231 include a lighter chassis, a range of powerful engines (including V6 and V8 options, as well as AMG performance variants), and advanced driver-assistance systems. Engine options varied depending on the market and year.
The model range typically included the SL 350 (later SL 400), SL 500 (later SL 550 in some markets), and high-performance AMG variants such as the SL 63 AMG and SL 65 AMG. AMG models featured enhanced performance, distinctive styling cues, and upgraded interior appointments.
The R231 underwent a facelift in 2016, featuring revised styling, updated technology, and enhancements to the engine range. Production of the R231 ceased in 2020, with its successor being a new SL model developed by Mercedes-AMG.
