Mastodon (band)

Mastodon is an American heavy metal band from Atlanta, Georgia, formed in early 2000. The band comprises Troy Sanders (bass/vocals), Brent Hinds (guitar/vocals), Bill Kelliher (guitar/backing vocals), and Brann Dailor (drums/vocals).

Known for their technically complex compositions, progressive song structures, and incorporation of diverse influences ranging from sludge metal and progressive rock to psychedelic and alternative metal, Mastodon has released nine studio albums: Remission (2002), Leviathan (2004), Blood Mountain (2006), Crack the Skye (2009), The Hunter (2011), Once More 'Round the Sun (2014), Emperor of Sand (2017), Hushed and Grim (2021), and Hushed and Grim (Extended Version) (2024).

Their album Leviathan, a concept album based loosely on Herman Melville's Moby-Dick, is widely considered a landmark release in modern metal. Crack the Skye is another notable concept album, exploring themes of astral projection and personal loss. Emperor of Sand won the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 2018 for the song "Sultan's Curse."

Mastodon's music often features mythological and fantastical themes, as well as introspective lyrics exploring personal struggles and experiences. They are considered a leading figure in the New Wave of American Heavy Metal movement. The band has toured extensively worldwide and has garnered critical acclaim for their live performances.
