Mamaku

Mamaku refers to a large New Zealand tree fern, Cyathea medullaris. It is one of the tallest tree ferns in the world, capable of reaching heights of up to 20 meters (66 feet).

Description:

  • Appearance: Mamaku are characterized by their black, stilt-like trunks, often covered in persistent scales from fallen fronds. They have a broad crown of dark green fronds.

  • Fronds: The fronds are large and tripinnate (divided three times), reaching lengths of several meters. The undersides of the fronds are covered in brown scales.

  • Trunk: The distinctive black trunk is fibrous and relatively soft.

Distribution and Habitat:

Mamaku is endemic to New Zealand, found throughout the North Island, South Island, and Stewart Island/Rakiura. It thrives in damp, shaded areas such as rainforests and along stream banks. It is a common component of lowland and lower montane forests.

Uses:

Historically, the pith of the mamaku trunk was an important food source for Māori, especially during times of scarcity. The pith is starchy and can be cooked or eaten raw, although it has a slightly bitter taste. The outer layers of the trunk were sometimes used in building.

Cultivation:

Mamaku can be cultivated in gardens, provided it has adequate moisture and shade. It is relatively slow-growing.

Conservation Status:

Mamaku is not currently considered threatened. It is a widespread and common species within its natural range.
