Mackenzie baronets of Tarbat (1628)

The Mackenzie baronets of Tarbat were a line of baronets created in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia on 21 May 1628 for Sir Roderick Mackenzie of Tarbat, a descendant of the Clan Mackenzie. The title became extinct upon the death of the third Baronet, Sir George Mackenzie.

The first Baronet, Sir Roderick Mackenzie (d. 1654), was a prominent figure in the politics of his time and was actively involved in royalist affairs.

The second Baronet was Sir George Mackenzie (d. 1714), who was also created Earl of Cromartie in 1703. However, the earldom was forfeited following his involvement in the Jacobite rising of 1715.

The third Baronet was Sir George Mackenzie, styled Lord Tarbat after his father was elevated to the peerage. Upon his death, the baronetcy became extinct as the earldom was forfeited and he had no heirs to inherit the baronetcy independently.

The Tarbat estate, closely associated with the family, played a significant role in their history and influence. The line is important for understanding the complexities of Scottish politics and clan dynamics during the 17th and early 18th centuries.
