Airline codes are identifiers assigned to airlines for various purposes, including reservations, ticketing, telecommunications, and documentation. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) are the primary bodies that assign these codes. IATA codes are two-character alphanumeric codes, while ICAO codes are three-letter alphabetic codes. Many airlines use both types of codes. The IATA codes are more widely used in passenger-facing contexts like booking systems and baggage tags, while ICAO codes are often used in air traffic control and operational contexts. Shared codes, also known as codeshare agreements, are common where one airline sells seats on a flight operated by another. These agreements allow airlines to expand their network without operating the flights themselves.
