Lerwick

Lerwick is the capital and main port of the Shetland Islands, Scotland. Located on the east coast of the island of Mainland, Lerwick is the northernmost town in Scotland. Its economy is largely driven by fishing, oil and gas industries, and tourism.

History:

Lerwick's history dates back to the 17th century, initially developing as a settlement driven by Dutch herring fishermen. This attracted merchants and traders, eventually leading to the establishment of a permanent community. The fort, Fort Charlotte, was built in the 17th century during the Anglo-Dutch Wars to protect the harbor. Lerwick replaced Scalloway as the capital of Shetland in 1708.

Lerwick is a major transport hub for Shetland. The Shetland Islands Council operates ferry services to other islands within the archipelago. Lerwick also has connections to mainland Scotland via ferry services to Aberdeen. Sumburgh Airport, located south of Lerwick, provides air links to various destinations.
