Kalpana 2

Kalpana 2 is the name of the second iteration of a proposed Indian crewed spacecraft. It is envisioned as a successor to the Gaganyaan program, India's first human spaceflight mission. While details remain preliminary and subject to change, Kalpana 2 is generally understood to represent India's ambition to establish a sustained human presence in space.

It's important to distinguish this proposed mission from the earlier MetSat-1, later renamed Kalpana-1 in memory of astronaut Kalpana Chawla, which was a dedicated meteorological satellite. The "2" designates this as a crewed follow-up to Gaganyaan, indicating an advancement in capabilities and objectives.

Specific aims for Kalpana 2 have not been officially detailed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) at the time of writing. However, potential goals might include longer duration missions, more complex in-space activities (such as scientific research or satellite servicing), and the possible development of a space station module.

The realisation of Kalpana 2 is contingent upon the successful execution and lessons learned from the Gaganyaan mission. Further announcements from ISRO are anticipated as the program progresses.
