Leo Barry
Leo Barry (born 4 August 1976) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Sydney Swans in the Australian Football League (AFL). He is best known for his spectacular defensive plays, particularly his intercept marking and spoiling ability.
Barry was drafted by the Swans in the 1994 AFL Draft and made his debut in 1995. He quickly established himself as a key member of the Swans' defence, known for his courage and determination. A strong mark and reliable kick, Barry was a consistent performer throughout his career.
His most famous moment came in the dying seconds of the 2005 AFL Grand Final against the West Coast Eagles. With the Eagles pressing for a match-winning goal, Barry took a spectacular contested mark deep in the Swans' defensive goal square, effectively sealing the Swans' first premiership in 72 years. This mark is widely regarded as one of the greatest marks in AFL Grand Final history and is simply referred to as "Leo Barry's mark."
Barry retired from AFL football at the end of the 2009 season. He played a total of 232 games for the Sydney Swans. Post-retirement, he has remained involved in the sport, including coaching roles at various levels. He is an official Legend of the Sydney Swans Football Club.
