Lee High School (Arkansas)
Lee High School was a public high school located in Marianna, Arkansas. It served students in grades 9-12 as part of the Lee County School District. The school was named for Confederate General Robert E. Lee.
In 2016, following a contentious public debate, the Lee County School Board voted to change the school's name to Lee Senior High School. This decision was made in response to growing concerns about the historical implications of the original name and its association with the Confederacy and slavery. The change was intended to promote a more inclusive and welcoming environment for all students.
Lee Senior High School continued to operate as a comprehensive high school, offering a variety of academic courses, extracurricular activities, and athletic programs. It served as a significant educational institution for the community of Marianna and Lee County until its consolidation.
In 2020, Lee Senior High School was consolidated with other schools in the district to form a new high school. The former Lee Senior High School building now houses a different educational program. The history of Lee High School, and its subsequent renaming and eventual consolidation, reflects the ongoing dialogues and changes within the Lee County community regarding its past and its future.
