Lazarides

Lazarides refers to a privately owned, independent art gallery that originated in London and played a significant role in popularizing and exhibiting street art and contemporary art. Established in 2006 by Steve Lazarides, a photographer and art curator initially known for his work with street artist Banksy, Lazarides Gallery focused on showcasing artists outside the mainstream gallery system.

Lazarides operated several gallery spaces in London, most notably on Rathbone Place and later on Greek Street. Its program was characterized by a deliberate shift away from traditional gallery practices, often staging exhibitions in unconventional or temporary spaces, and focusing on artists whose work engaged with urban environments and contemporary issues.

The gallery was instrumental in bringing street art to a wider audience and commercial market, exhibiting artists such as Banksy (in earlier years), JR, Invader, Antony Micallef, Jonathan Yeo, and Vhils. The gallery's exhibitions often attracted significant attention and controversy, contributing to the broader acceptance and valuation of street art within the contemporary art world.

In addition to its London gallery spaces, Lazarides also organized pop-up exhibitions and projects internationally, expanding its reach and influence.

While the physical gallery in London has since closed, the Lazarides brand continues to operate, focusing on art consultancy, online sales, and representing artists. The legacy of Lazarides Gallery remains significant for its contribution to the development and commercialization of street art and its support of emerging and unconventional artists.
