Harriman State Park (Idaho)

Harriman State Park is a 4,000-acre wildlife refuge and recreational area located in Island Park, Idaho, in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. The park is centered around the Railroad Ranch, a historic cattle ranch established in the early 20th century and later gifted to the state by the Harriman family (E. Roland and Gladys Harriman) in 1977.

The park is renowned for its pristine landscapes, which include the meandering Henry's Fork of the Snake River, lush meadows, forests of lodgepole pine and aspen, and abundant wildlife. The Henry's Fork is a world-renowned fly-fishing destination, attracting anglers from around the globe.

Harriman State Park offers a variety of recreational activities, including hiking, biking, horseback riding, camping, and wildlife viewing. Numerous trails crisscross the park, providing access to diverse habitats and scenic vistas. In the winter, the park transforms into a winter wonderland, with opportunities for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

The Railroad Ranch itself is a significant historical feature, with well-preserved buildings that offer insights into the ranching lifestyle of the early 1900s. Visitors can tour the ranch buildings and learn about the history of the Harriman family and their contributions to the area.

The park's abundant wildlife includes moose, elk, deer, bison (occasionally), waterfowl, and a variety of bird species. The park's location within the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem makes it an important habitat for these animals.

Harriman State Park is managed by the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation. The park's mission is to preserve the natural and cultural resources of the area while providing opportunities for responsible recreation and education.
