Lü Dong
Lü Dong (呂洞) is a common alternative transliteration of the name Lü Dongbin (呂洞賓), one of the most famous and widely venerated of the Eight Immortals (八仙) in the Daoist pantheon.
Lü Dongbin is often depicted as a scholar and swordsman, wielding a magical sword that dispels evil spirits. He is a patron saint of barbers, scholars, and particularly sick people. His stories and legends are numerous, portraying him as a wandering immortal who tests the virtue of mortals and offers salvation.
Lü Dongbin is said to have attained immortality in the Tang Dynasty. He is a central figure in the Quanzhen School of Daoism and is also associated with internal alchemy (Neidan) practices. Many temples and shrines throughout China are dedicated to him, and his image is frequently found in Daoist art and iconography. He is also a popular figure in Chinese folklore and opera.
