Komi (Zyryan) Autonomous Oblast
The Komi (Zyryan) Autonomous Oblast was an administrative-territorial unit (an autonomous oblast) within the Russian SFSR of the Soviet Union. It was created on August 22, 1921, out of the Komi-Zyryan Uyezd. Its administrative center was the city of Syktyvkar (formerly known as Ust-Sysolsk). The name "Zyryan" was a historical name for the Komi people.
In 1936, the Komi (Zyryan) Autonomous Oblast was reorganized and elevated to the status of Komi Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (Komi ASSR). This change reflected a broader Soviet policy of granting greater autonomy to certain ethnic regions. The Komi ASSR remained a part of the Russian SFSR until the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
The primary population of the oblast consisted of the Komi people, a Finno-Ugric ethnic group. The economy was largely based on natural resource extraction, including timber and minerals.
