123rd Battalion (Royal Grenadiers), CEF
The 123rd Battalion (Royal Grenadiers), CEF was an infantry battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) during the First World War. Authorized on 22 December 1915 and officially formed on 22 March 1916, the battalion was raised in Montreal, Quebec, and recruited primarily from the 1st Regiment, Grenadier Guards of Canada.
The battalion embarked for Great Britain on 3 August 1916, aboard the Empress of Britain. Upon arrival, it was initially stationed at Shorncliffe Camp. On 13 October 1916, the 123rd Battalion was absorbed into the 13th Reserve Battalion. As such, the 123rd Battalion served primarily as a reinforcement unit, providing trained soldiers to other Canadian units fighting on the Western Front. It did not serve as an independent fighting unit in France or Belgium.
The commanding officer of the 123rd Battalion was Lieutenant-Colonel G.P. England.
The battalion is perpetuated by the Royal Montreal Regiment.
