Kirkcowan
Kirkcowan is a village and civil parish in Dumfries and Galloway, southwest Scotland. It is located approximately 6 miles (9.7 km) west of Newton Stewart on the A75 road.
The village has a church, a primary school, and a village hall. Historically, the area was agricultural, with dairy farming being a significant activity. Kirkcowan has seen a decline in population in recent decades, reflecting broader trends in rural Scotland.
The name "Kirkcowan" is derived from the Gaelic "Cille Chuain," meaning "church of St. Cowan." The church is said to have been founded by St. Cowan, an obscure local saint, in the early Christian period.
The civil parish of Kirkcowan includes several smaller settlements and rural areas surrounding the village.
