Roy Bailey (folk singer)

Roy Bailey (20 October 1935 – 20 November 2018) was an English socialist folk singer and guitarist. He was known for his commitment to political activism, particularly his support for anti-apartheid causes, trade unionism, and peace movements.

Born in Sheffield, Bailey’s musical career spanned over five decades. He was a powerful and distinctive performer, often singing traditional folk songs alongside contemporary material, blending social commentary with a warm and engaging stage presence.

Bailey collaborated with numerous prominent musicians throughout his career, including Leon Rosselson, Robb Johnson, and Chumbawamba. He released a number of albums, including "A Taste of Sheffield" (1966), "Hard Times" (1968), "Live Johnny Live" (1980), and "Below the Radar" (2009).

His commitment to social justice led him to perform at countless benefit concerts and rallies. He was a lifelong supporter of the Labour Party and often used his music to highlight social inequalities and campaign for political change.

Bailey was awarded the prestigious Folk Award for Best Live Act at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2003. He was also nominated for Folk Singer of the Year in 2004.
