Khachkar

A Khachkar (Armenian: խաչքար, pronounced [χɑtʃʰˈkʰɑɾ]; literally "cross-stone") is a carved, memorial stele bearing a cross, typically found in Armenia. Khachkars are characteristic of Armenian Christian art and are a significant part of Armenian cultural heritage.

The most common feature of a Khachkar is a cross, usually elaborately ornamented and often a "tree of life" cross (a cross with roots extending downwards). Below the cross, there is often a rosette or solar symbol. The remaining surface of the Khachkar is typically filled with intricate carvings, which may include geometric patterns, depictions of saints, animals, foliage, and sometimes biblical scenes or donor portraits.

Khachkars are often erected to commemorate a religious event, a victory in battle, the construction of a church or monastery, or as a gravestone. They serve as a tangible link between the earthly and divine realms.

The creation of a Khachkar is a highly skilled craft, traditionally passed down through generations of stonemasons. The process involves selecting a suitable stone, carving the intricate design with precision, and finishing the stone with careful attention to detail.

Khachkars are found throughout Armenia and in Armenian communities worldwide. They represent a unique and enduring form of Armenian artistic expression and religious devotion.
