McEwan's
McEwan's is a brand of beer historically brewed in Edinburgh, Scotland. Founded by William McEwan in 1856, the McEwan's Brewery became one of the largest breweries in Scotland. McEwan's beers were known for their distinctive yeast strains and strong ale styles, particularly McEwan's Export and McEwan's Scotch Ale.
The brand was acquired by Scottish & Newcastle in 1931. Production moved from the original Fountain Brewery in Edinburgh to other locations over time. Scottish & Newcastle was subsequently acquired by Heineken and Carlsberg in 2008.
While brewing of McEwan's beers has been intermittent and the brand's ownership has changed, it continues to be produced under license by various breweries. The brand maintains a nostalgic association with Scottish brewing history. Key beers historically associated with the McEwan's brand include McEwan's Export, McEwan's Champion, McEwan's 80/- (Eighty Shilling), and McEwan's Scotch Ale. These beers represented a range of styles and strengths, catering to a diverse consumer base. The brand remains recognizable in Scotland and among some beer enthusiasts internationally, though its market presence has diminished compared to its peak.
