HMS Corunna (D97)

HMS Corunna (D97) was a C-class destroyer of the Royal Navy that saw service during World War II. She was one of eight ships of the class ordered in July 1940.

Corunna was laid down on 16 December 1942 by John Brown & Company, Clydebank, launched on 15 May 1944, and commissioned on 4 January 1945. She was named after the Battle of Corunna, a battle during the Peninsular War.

Upon commissioning, Corunna joined the 23rd Destroyer Flotilla of the British Pacific Fleet and served in the Far East during the final months of World War II. She participated in operations against Japanese forces in the East Indies and provided support for the Allied landings in Borneo.

After the war, Corunna remained in service with the Royal Navy, participating in various exercises and deployments. In the 1950s, she underwent a modernization program, including the fitting of improved anti-submarine equipment.

Corunna was decommissioned in 1959 and subsequently scrapped. She served with distinction during and after the war.
