Ang Thong

Ang Thong (อ่างทอง) is a province (changwat) of Thailand, located in the central region of the country.

Geography: Ang Thong is situated in the Chao Phraya River basin, characterized by flat, fertile plains. It's a primarily agricultural province, with rice cultivation being a major occupation. The terrain is largely devoid of significant hills or forests. It is located approximately 100 kilometers north of Bangkok.

History: The history of Ang Thong dates back to the Dvaravati period. It served as an important border city during the Ayutthaya Kingdom. The name "Ang Thong" literally translates to "golden basin," likely referring to the province's fertile land. The area was historically important for its role in defending the Ayutthaya capital from Burmese invasions.

Administration: Ang Thong is divided into seven districts (amphoe): Mueang Ang Thong, Chaiyo, Pa Mok, Pho Thong, Sawaeng Ha, Wiset Chai Chan, and Samko. These districts are further subdivided into sub-districts (tambon) and villages (muban).

Economy: Agriculture, particularly rice farming, is the mainstay of the Ang Thong economy. Other crops include fruits and vegetables. Tourism is also developing, with visitors attracted to the province's temples and cultural sites.

Culture and Religion: Theravada Buddhism is the dominant religion in Ang Thong. The province is home to numerous temples (wats), some of which are historically significant and architecturally noteworthy. Traditional Thai culture is prevalent, including festivals and local handicrafts.

Tourism: Key attractions in Ang Thong include:

  • Wat Muang: Known for its giant seated Buddha statue.
  • Wat Khun Inthapramun: Famous for its reclining Buddha image.
  • Ang Thong Provincial Museum: Showcasing the history and culture of the province.
  • Local markets: Offering local produce, handicrafts, and food.

Transportation: Ang Thong is accessible by road and rail. The main highway connecting Bangkok to northern Thailand passes through the province. The State Railway of Thailand also provides train services to Ang Thong.
