Königsstuhl (Rügen)

The Königsstuhl (King's Chair) is the best-known chalk cliff on the island of Rügen in northeastern Germany. It is located within the Jasmund National Park and is a major tourist attraction.

The Königsstuhl rises 118 metres (387 ft) above the Baltic Sea. The name "Königsstuhl" is said to derive from the legend that in ancient times, whoever wanted to become king had to climb up this cliff from the seaward side.

Visitors can access the Königsstuhl via the National Park Centre Königsstuhl, which offers exhibitions about the park's flora, fauna, and geological history. A viewing platform, the Königsstuhl itself, provides panoramic views of the Baltic Sea and the surrounding coastline. While the original "Königsstuhl" was a natural rock formation that could be climbed, access is now restricted to the designated viewing platform for safety and conservation reasons.

Erosion is an ongoing process at the Königsstuhl and other chalk cliffs on Rügen. Measures are in place to monitor and mitigate the effects of erosion to ensure the safety of visitors and the preservation of this natural landmark.
