Jonathan Blake (activist)
Jonathan Blake (born 1949) is a British gay rights activist, HIV/AIDS campaigner, and actor. He is best known as a member of Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM), a support group that raised money for striking miners during the 1984-1985 UK miners' strike.
Blake's activism began in the early 1970s, participating in Gay Liberation Front protests. He became involved with LGSM after seeing a collection tin at a gay bookshop and was active in the group's work to build solidarity between the LGBTQ+ community and striking miners in the Dulais Valley, South Wales.
Following the end of the miners' strike, Blake continued his activism, particularly in the area of HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention. He was diagnosed with HIV in 1982, early in the AIDS epidemic, and has been a vocal advocate for people living with HIV and AIDS. He has spoken extensively about his experiences, challenging stigma and promoting safe sex practices.
Blake's story, along with that of LGSM, was popularized in the 2014 film Pride, in which he was portrayed by Dominic West. The film brought renewed attention to the important role of LGSM in building alliances between different social movements and in challenging homophobia and prejudice.
Beyond his activism, Blake has also worked as an actor, appearing in theatre and television productions. His activism and personal story have made him a significant figure in LGBTQ+ history and a prominent voice in campaigns for equality and social justice.
