John Toohey (bishop)
John Toohey (born 1844, died 1914) was an Irish-born Roman Catholic bishop who served in the United States.
Toohey was born in Templemore, County Tipperary, Ireland. He emigrated to the United States and was ordained a priest in the Diocese of Pittsburgh in 1867.
He was appointed the first Bishop of the Diocese of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, in 1889. He served in this position until his death in 1914. During his episcopate, he focused on establishing parishes, schools, and charitable institutions within the expanding diocese. He worked to serve the growing population of settlers and Native Americans in the region. He is buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Sioux Falls.
