John Merrill (American politician)

John Merrill is an American politician who served as the Secretary of State of Alabama from 2015 to 2023. A member of the Republican Party, Merrill previously served in the Alabama House of Representatives, representing District 63 from 2010 to 2014.

Born in Heflin, Alabama, Merrill graduated from Jacksonville State University. Before entering politics, he worked in sales and marketing.

As Secretary of State, Merrill oversaw elections, business registration, and various other administrative functions within the state. He focused on voter integrity measures, including advocating for voter ID laws and removing deceased individuals from voter rolls. He also worked to streamline the business registration process.

In 2021, Merrill announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Richard Shelby, but later withdrew from the race. His tenure as Secretary of State ended in January 2023.
