John Gutch (clergyman)

John Gutch (1746 – 1831) was an English clergyman, antiquarian, and academic based at Oxford.

Born in Honiton, Devon, Gutch received his education at Exeter School before matriculating at Wadham College, Oxford in 1761. He was elected a Fellow of All Souls College in 1766, a position he held until his marriage. He served as chaplain of All Souls and became registrar of the University of Oxford.

Gutch was a prolific writer and editor, contributing significantly to the historical record of Oxford University and its surrounding area. He edited and expanded Anthony Wood's History and Antiquities of the University of Oxford (1786-1796) and Fasti Oxonienses (1790), adding extensive notes and appendices that remain valuable resources for historians. He also edited collections of documents relating to Oxford's history and published works on topographical subjects.

In addition to his academic pursuits, Gutch held the rectory of St Clement's, Oxford, from 1795 until his death. He also served as chaplain to the Lord Bishop of Oxford. His dedication to both academic and religious duties solidified his position as a respected figure within Oxford society.
