John Cheney (engraver)

John Cheney (1801-1885) was an American engraver, best known for his portrait engravings and bank note designs. He was born in South Manchester, Connecticut, and trained as an engraver under Asaph Willard. Along with his brother Seth Cheney, who was a portrait artist, John traveled and worked extensively. He collaborated with his brother on several projects, including engravings after Seth's portraits.

Cheney's work encompassed a variety of subjects, including portraits of prominent figures of his time, such as presidents, statesmen, and artists. He also produced engravings for book illustrations and commercial purposes. His skill in capturing likeness and detail made him a sought-after engraver during the 19th century.
