John Campbell (Upper Canada politician)
John Campbell (born circa 1765, died January 1828) was a prominent political figure in Upper Canada during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada representing Durham, Simcoe and the East Riding of York from 1796 to 1800, and then York and Simcoe from 1804 to 1812.
Campbell was a loyalist who likely arrived in Upper Canada after the American Revolution. He was a significant landowner and held various public offices, including justice of the peace and militia officer. He was known to be a supporter of Lieutenant Governor Peter Hunter. During his time in the Legislative Assembly, he generally aligned himself with the conservative faction and supported policies that favored the established elite. He was also involved in the debates surrounding land ownership and the allocation of resources in the developing colony. He is buried at St. James Cemetery in Toronto.
