Carl Haag

Carl Haag (1820-1915) was a German-born painter who later became a naturalized British citizen. He is best known for his Orientalist paintings and watercolors, often depicting scenes from Egypt and the Middle East.

Haag was born in Bavaria and initially trained as a decorative painter and engraver. He moved to England in 1847, where he joined the Royal Watercolour Society. Haag's detailed and realistic style, combined with his exotic subject matter, proved popular with the British public.

He traveled extensively throughout the Middle East, including Egypt, Palestine, and Syria, making detailed studies and sketches that he later used as the basis for his finished paintings. His works are characterized by their vibrant colors, meticulous attention to detail, and realistic portrayals of local people and customs.

Haag enjoyed considerable success during his lifetime, exhibiting regularly at the Royal Academy and other prestigious venues. His patrons included Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. He returned to Germany later in life and died there in 1915.
