James Scott (boxer)
James Scott (born June 24, 1947, Newark, New Jersey, died May 8, 2018) was an American professional boxer. He gained notoriety for his boxing career that largely took place while he was incarcerated at Rahway State Prison (now East Jersey State Prison) in New Jersey.
Scott, a light heavyweight, began boxing professionally in 1978 while serving a 30-40 year sentence for armed robbery. Due to his prison location, he was able to train and compete against top contenders, turning Rahway State Prison into a unique and highly publicized boxing venue. His fights drew large crowds, including celebrities and members of the media.
Scott's boxing record included victories over highly ranked opponents such as Eddie Mustafa Muhammad (then Eddie Gregory), Jerry "Bull" Martin, and Yaqui Lopez. However, he also suffered losses, notably against Dwight Muhammad Qawi (then Dwight Braxton).
His boxing career effectively ended after he was transferred to a more restrictive prison facility. After being paroled, Scott struggled to rebuild his life.
