Jack Mitchell (photographer)

Jack Mitchell (1925-2013) was an American photographer known primarily for his portraits of artists, writers, dancers, and performers. His career spanned over six decades, during which he captured iconic images of some of the most influential figures in the arts, including Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Merce Cunningham, Twyla Tharp, and Allen Ginsberg.

Born in Key West, Florida, Mitchell served in the Navy during World War II before moving to New York City to pursue his passion for photography. He initially worked in commercial photography but soon gravitated towards portraiture. His distinctive style, characterized by strong lighting, dramatic compositions, and an intimate connection with his subjects, quickly established him as a sought-after photographer.

Mitchell worked extensively for The New York Times for over thirty years, contributing portraits for the Arts & Leisure section and other parts of the newspaper. He also photographed for numerous other publications, including Dance Magazine, Life, and Vogue.

His work is held in the permanent collections of numerous museums, including the National Portrait Gallery, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
