JDS Harusame (DD-109)

The JDS Harusame (DD-109) was a Harusame-class destroyer of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF). She was the second ship of her class, and the second JMSDF ship to bear the name Harusame, translating roughly to "spring rain". The Harusame-class destroyers were designed as anti-submarine warfare (ASW) escorts.

Laid down in 1958 and commissioned in 1960, JDS Harusame served throughout the Cold War period, primarily focused on maritime patrol and ASW duties in the waters surrounding Japan. She participated in numerous exercises with other JMSDF ships and occasionally with vessels from allied navies, such as the United States Navy. Her primary armament consisted of anti-submarine rockets, torpedoes, and guns. As technology advanced, she underwent refits and upgrades to maintain her operational effectiveness.

Decommissioned in 1989, JDS Harusame (DD-109) represents an important period in the development and modernization of the JMSDF, highlighting Japan's commitment to maritime defense in the face of Cold War tensions and regional security concerns. After decommissioning, she was scrapped.
